RIVERSIDE — Borough administrators are already impressed with the work a local Boy Scout is putting into his still under construction Eagle project.
Chris Morgan, age 16, of Riverside’s Boy Scout Troop 33, is installing seven flagpoles in front of the war memorial in back of Riverside’s borough office building. The seven flags will consist of an American flag, a POW/MIA flag and flags for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
“He really deserves this Eagle award,” said borough secretary Deb Bausch.
“Speaking as a council member, I couldn’t be more flattered that he chose to do this for the borough,” said council member John LaMotte. “I think he went over and beyond what I’ve seen some Eagle Scout projects do. He’s a very energetic young man, he raised a lot of money. It’s just an outstanding project for the borough of Riverside.”
Last weekend, Chris and about 16 volunteers helped dig out holes needed to pour in the concrete base for the flagpoles. “In one weekend, we got five out of the seven holes for the concrete bases,” said Chris.
He and his volunteers, including his father, Mike, LaMotte, and LaMotte’s 8-year old son, Jacob, worked from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 30.
The afternoon of April 4, Chris, his father, and troop member Kyle Roberts, age 11, began setting up the PVC sleeves that will hold the flagpoles in place once they are installed.
“I’m very pleased with how it’s coming along so far,” said Chris. “I know all the people who worked there on Saturday said they were thoroughly pleased with how far it came along.”
Landscaping work is scheduled for May, and Chris is looking for volunteers to assist with that work. Merrell’s Nursery has given him layouts for foliage to use around the memorial as well as pricing for plants.
Chris anticipates the project will cost a total of $6000. He currently has $4700 raised, with donations coming from the local American Legion post and Southside Fire Company, as well as individual residents.
