Live broadcast celebrates middle school charity fundraising

— DANVILLE – Middle school staff and students will play host to WNEP broadcaster Ryan Leckey for raising the most money for charity among regional schools.

Over the past several weeks, Danville Middle School has collected $4286 for Allied Services, which supports children and adults with disabilities. Leckey had challenged regional schools to raise money for charity as part of his “Ryan’s Run” fundraiser, where Leckey runs the New York City Marathon every year in support of Allied Services. Leckey promised to hold a live broadcast at the school that raised the most money, and Danville Middle School was the winner.

The early morning broadcast will take place from 4:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, at the middle school gymnasium.

“We all worked so hard so we’re very excited,” said middle school counselor Christen Mishura, one of the fundraising organizers. Danville Middle School was especially eager to win as a way of announcing their return to their building, which had been closed following flood damage in September 2011. The broadcast “is another great way for us to give back to the community after they gave back to us after the flood,” Mishura said.

The school re-opened at the start of this school year, after an $11.5 million restoration. Of those repairs, $10 million was paid for by state and federal agencies.

The school collected money for Allied Services via events including raffles, sales of Danville T-shirts adorned with the phrase “We Will Above,” bake sales, a school social and a student dodge ball tournament.

The broadcast is open to middle school staff, students and their families, who are requested to arrive by 4:15 a.m. if they want to attend.

The school’s cheerleaders and band will perform and the staff will talk with Leckey about their successful return to the building, Mishura said.
