New Montour County Children and Youth center will enhance family visitations

DANVILLE — Montour County’s Children and Youth Services Agency plans a family visitation center.

Agency Director Craig Patterson said a letter was received March 28 notifying him of a $2,109 grant that can be used to enhance the quality of family visitations.

The county commissioners, at their meeting Tuesday, approved the agency remodeling a room on the first floor of the human services complex along Woodbine Lane. The room had been an office but is now vacant.

Patterson said they will create a one-way observation room so a caseworker can observe a family.

“This will be place for families to visit and different than them coming into our office,” Patterson said.

He has a tentative budget of $2,500 for the project to be funded 80 percent by the state and 20 percent with county money.

He expects to place a computer, with limited access, for families to use for job searches.

Patterson anticipates a TV and a DVD will be available. “We already have the furniture. We will be relocating it downstairs,” he said.

Commissioner Jerry Ward said the commissioners plan to use Community Development Block Grant funds to extend a handicap access ramp in the building. This can be used by people going to the children and youth services offices, veterans’ affairs and other offices, he said.

Once completed, Patterson said the family visitation center could be used for other purposes when not being used for visitations.
