Mayor: We need to educate about osteopathic medicine

DANVILLE — Bernie Swank signed her first proclamation Tuesday after taking office again as Danville’s mayor.

She proclaimed National Osteopathic Medicine Week as April 13-19. On hand for the signing in the municipal building was Dr. Michael Ryan, chief of pediatrics at Geisinger Medical Center.

In the proclamation, the mayor noted there are more than 82,000 osteopathic physicians in the U.S. who have made tremendous contributions to the American health care system since Dr. Andrew Taylor Still founded osteopathic medicine in 1874.

She urged citizens and community organizations to support the observance by helping to educate people about osteopathic medicine and osteopathic doctors.

Danville’s practicing osteopathic doctors are dedicated to improving the health of their community through education and awareness-based efforts as well as by delivering quality health services, the proclamation states.

Osteopathic physicians believe a person’s lifestyle, including home, work and social environments, play a significant role in the individual’s health with osteopathic physicians having treated U.S. presidents, Olympic athletes, contributed to the fight against AIDs and served on nationwide health care panels, according to the proclamation.
