Audiology a perfect fit for Corbin

DANVILLE — Dr. Lucy Corbin’s work is music to her ears.

The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, originally planned to be a professional pianist when she grew up, until a doctor diagnosed her with tendonitis when she was young. Corbin, who also plays the violin and flute, wasn’t sure what to do with herself until a career test recommended audiology.

“I always loved music and sound,” she said, so a job where she could help people hear better seemed like a natural fit.

In January, Corbin opened her private audiology practice, splitting her time between an office on Danville’s Lower Mulberry Street and another located on the campus of Sunbury Community Hospital. Corbin wanted to clarify that she is not a staff member at the hospital but does use space on the campus.

At her practice, the Washingtonville resident conducts hearing tests, fits people for hearing aids and makes custom ear plugs. She can also create custom headphone earbuds fitted to a person’s ears.

Corbin did a “soft opening” when she opened at the start of the year, but now wants to start spreading the word about her practice. “I’m starting to get busy,” she said. She’s planning to have a grand opening near the end of May.

Corbin graduated from Brazil’s Sao Paulo Federal University 13 years ago, before receiving a scholarship at Bloomsburg University to receive her doctorate. What kept her in America after earning her degree was meeting her future husband, Steve, at Danville’s Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

“I met him in church and I couldn’t leave,” she said.

Together, they raised Steve’s daughter, now 17, as well as having two children of their own, an 18-month old boy and a 5-year old girl.

Moving from Sao Paulo, one of the largest cities in the world, to Pennsylvania was a bit of a culture shock, but one that Corbin has grown to love.

“I don’t miss the pollution or traffic,” she said. Sao Paulo has a population of about 11.3 million, while Pennsylvania has a population of approximately 12 million. “It’s the whole state of Pennsylvania in one city,” she said.

“I really like the country,” Corbin added, and she especially loves watching Amish buggies drive by.
