Riverside expects healthcare savings to beat back budget deficit

— RIVERSIDE – While the borough’s approved final budget for 2014 has a deficit of $27,895, the borough will actually save at least $28,000 for the year through new health plan deals.

In addition, taxes will not be raised in the borough next year.

Riverside’s borough council approved the 2014 budget at its Dec. 2 meeting. The budget had total receipts for the year as $721,316 and total costs at $749,211. All present members voted in favor of the budget. Not present were members Mike Maize, Bob Betts and Lori Vastine-Steele.

While the borough has not yet committed to a health care plan for its seven employees for 2014, the current offer given by Geisinger Health Plan will save them approximately $28,000 over their current plan with the same provider.

The borough is still waiting to hear back from Blue Cross and Blue Shield to see if they can beat that price, said borough secretary Deb Bausch.

For 2013, the borough paid approximately $116,400 for coverage from Geisinger Health Plan for the year.
