RIVERSIDE — Borough council president Peter Fleming and police chief Isaac Ramer warned residents of phone scams that have been reported in the area.
“All residents should be aware there are those trying to make money without working,” said Fleming.
According to Ramer, these calls are becoming more common in parts of Northumberland County, such as Watsontown and Milton, as well as neighboring communities such as Danville.
About one or two of these calls come in a month, said Ramer, though so far he does not know of anyone who has fallen for them. The scammer’s typical ploy is to tell the responder that they have a gift incoming, but need to make some sort of down payment first.
Anybody who receives a call is advised to contact the police. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, said Ramer.
