Mr. and Mrs. Gen. Robert E. Lee to visit Danville during Iron Heritage Festival

— DANVILLE — Gen. and Mrs. Robert E. Lee will visit this year’s Iron Heritage Festival.

Frank and Bonnie Orlando portray Robert and Mary Anne Lee.

They will be part of the annual parade starting at 7 p.m. July 18.

Lee, along with James Getty, portraying President Abraham Lincoln, will present “After Gettysburg,” at 10:30 a.m. July 19 at 100 W. Market St.

The Lees will be at the T-Rail Theater at 3:30 p.m. and at the Booth Theater at 6 p.m. on July 19.

Lee’s family history is interesting. His father, Light Horse Harry Lee, was a Revolutionary War hero serving under George Washington who eulogized Washington after his death by writing he was “first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

Two members of the Lee family risked their lives by signing the Declaration of Independence.

Lee graduated in 1829 from West Point without any demerits, earning the nickname “the marble man.”

He married Mary Anna Randolph Custis, the step-great-granddaughter of George Washington who was Lee’s idol.

The Lees inherited Arlington House which was confiscated by the Lincoln administration and became Arlington National Cemetery.

Lee became president of Washington College which is now Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He held the position from 1865 until he died in 1870.
