Fewer transit riders in Montour, Northumberland

— Total ridership for public transportation in Northumberland and Montour counties decreased in the last year while the number of Union-Snyder Transportation Alliance riders increased.

The information, which was released in a 236-page state report about transportation systems across Pennsylvania, also shows the various changes in average shared-ride fares for the three systems.

Public transportation in Northumberland County is provided by subcontractor Rabbittransit, which has a local headquarters in Elysburg.

In fiscal year 2011-12, the company reported that approximately 140,000 total riders were using the system, but that number dropped by approximately 20,000 to 118,181 in the latest fiscal year.

The average shared-ride fare increased from approximately $14 in 2011-12 to $18 in the next year.

Public transportation in Montour County is provided by Montour County Transit, located in Danville.

In fiscal year 2011-12, the county reported that approximately 20,000 total riders were using the system, but the number slightly decreased to 18,120 in the latest fiscal year.

The average shared-ride fare remained relatively constant at a price between $10 and $12 from one fiscal year to the next.

Public transportation in Snyder and Union counties is provided by the Union-Snyder Transportation Alliance, which is based in Lewisburg.

In fiscal year 2011-12, the agency reported that approximately 60,000 total riders were using the system, but the number increased by more than 10,000 riders to 74,279 in the latest fiscal year.

The average shared-ride fare decreased slightly at a price between $15 and $20 from one fiscal year to the next.
