Director: Number of transit riders varies

— DANVILLE — The number of senior citizens in Montour County using the shared ride PennDOT-funded program varies, according to County Transit Director Amanda Boyer.

“It can fluctuate depending on who is riding, gas could have been a lot cheaper and we had a budget crunch on another program that decreased everything,” she said Monday of the number of shared program rides being slightly down in 2012-13 compared with 2011-12.

The Pennsylvania Public Transportation Annual Performance Report showed about 20,000 rides in 2011-12 compared with 18,120 rides in 2012-13.

The shared ride program is used by senior citizens who are 65 and older.

The public transportation report shows only programs funded by PennDOT and not other programs provided by Montour County Transit.

Shared ride trips in 2011-12 totaled 11,532 in the county with Boyer saying that is “pretty good considering the county has a population of 18,267 and the 65-plus population is 3,395.”

The county also hasn’t changed the fee it charges seniors for shared rides. For an appointment, for example, they pay 50 cents one way.

She said the $10 to $12 shown in the report of an average shared ride fare is what the county bills PennDOT for each rider.

Another program transit offers, medical assistance trips, showed 3,817 trips in 2012-13 in Montour County alone, she said.

The county hasn’t changed its fares for the shared ride program since 2005.
