Center turns 40

DANVILLE — DANVILLE – The Danville Child Development Center observed its 40th birthday on Feb. 4.

That is the day in 1974 the center opened its doors to the greater Danville community with a mission of offering a program where children from all walks of life, regardless of their handicap, developmental level or economic status, can play and learn together in a safe and nurturing environment. It is an environment where those differences are not noticed but individuality is respected, according to Center Executive Director Diana Dixon.

The idea for the center came from Kathleen Mulligan and Nancy Vella. Beginning with six children, the co-founders initially provided care in the basement of Shiloh United Church of Christ.

The center, now with locations on Wall Street and Old Bloom Road, has become a diverse organization serving more than 500 children each year from infancy through school-age with its early learning and child care, early intervention and child care subsidy administration.
