Riverside council: school district should have asked before giving away generator

RIVERSIDE — Borough council members expressed annoyance at the Danville school board’s decision to give away a $10,000 emergency generator from the Riverside Elementary School without first asking Riverside’s fire department.

School board members voted to give the generator to Danville’s Washingtonville Fire and Hose Company at their Sept. 10 meeting.

Riverside’s Southside Fire Company was not notified of the generator being up for donation, said council president Peter Fleming at the Sept. 16 borough council work session.

“We thought an inquiry by the school board to Southside may have been in order,” he said.

“To not even notify the fire company I think was in poor taste,” added council member Barb Kriner.

The school board vote to donate the generator was passed 6-1. Board president Allan Schappert voted against the measure. School board members Chris Outt and Jamie Hosterman were not in attendance for the meeting.

When contacted regarding the borough council’s comments, Schappert said that, while he did not agree with the measure, the school board acts as a majority and he will abide by its vote.

Also donated at the school board’s Sept. 10 meeting were Riverside Elementary School classroom materials, including tables, projectors, smart boards and filing cabinets, to the Danville Ambulance Services.

The Danville school district, as far as Schappert knows, only made offers of the generator and classroom materials to other school districts. The motion to donate both the supplies and the generator were initiated at the request of a board member, though Schappert declined to name whom.

Items from Riverside Elementary School are scheduled to be sold at an auction held at the elementary school on Oct. 19. The generator was not among the items to be sold at auction.

In an economic environment where schools are “squeezing nickels,” Schappert said he would have rather seen the generator be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The school board’s next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 24.
