DUI Memorial visits Danville Middle School

— DANVILLE – A moving memorial containing the names of more than 2,000 victims of Pennsylvania DUI crashes made a stop at the Danville Middle School for community members to pay their respects Dec. 16.

The memorial is a 25-foot wall housed in a 30-foot trailer, with names dating back from accidents in 1947. Additional names are shown on a scrolling TV screen built into the trailer.

“It’s a way to honor people who have senselessly lost their lives,” said George Geisler, Jr., of Team DUI and the Pennsylvania DUI Association, the groups which present the memorial.

The memorial started its most recent tour the week of Dec. 2. It’s already gone to the western part of the state and is now visiting Pennsylvania’s northern communities, some for the first time, Geisler said.

The memorial was first shown in 2005, and was much smaller then. “Each year it seems we have to add a new panel,” Geisler said. In 2012, there were 404 deaths related to DUI accidents. That’s the equivalent of two jumbo jets, according to Geisler.
