Kickball tourney coming

DANVILLE — DANVILLE – For the second year, a kickball tournament will be held to help hospitalized sick and injured children.

The deadline for early registration is April 10 for the Kickin’ It for Kids Kickball Tournament at Hess Recreation Area. Those registering early will receive a free T-shirt. The registration cost is $15 per player for the tournament starting at 9 a.m. May 10.

Proceeds benefit the Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital Miracle Network.

Last year, the tournament attracted 10 teams raising $1,200.

“We hope to raise more this year,” said organizer and children’s hospital Registered Nurse Julie Gombert. Teams last year came from as far as Harrisburg and Scranton. Her husband John and friends and family members also formed teams.

Helping out will be their daughter Farrah, 3, and their son Gaje, 7.

Kickball is played similar to softball but with the pitcher rolling a large ball toward the kicker.

Kickball has become a past time many adults find relaxing.

Teams need to be made up of 8 to 11 people. Ages 14 and younger than 18 can play with parental approval.

A T-shirt design contest will be held with teams creating their own T-shirts.

Prizes will be awarded for the winning design.

Gombert and employees of the third-floor of the children’s hospital decided to organize the tournament last year because, “We wanted something that was a fun way to raise money and the money helps us provide the best care for our patients,” she said.

More than one game will be going on at a time during the tournament.

McGuigan’s Public House in Sunbury will have food available.

To register, call 1-800-322-5437, email jgombert@geisinger.edu. or visit www.facebook.com/kickinitforkidskickball.
