No library rules: Program encourages singing, dancing

— DANVILLE — It’s a time when kids are encouraged not to be still.

“Music and Movement” gets them singing, dancing, walking and running around the community room of the Thomas Beaver Free Library at Ferry and East Market streets.

Two-year-old Jeremy Marks decided to climb up on a chair and try it out for a while.

His mother, Jenn Marks, said that was the first time he sat in that chair. She was sitting on the floor as were other mothers and their babies, toddlers and preschoolers.

Volunteer Robin Cronin leads the free weekly program that begins at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays.

“We sit, we stand, we play instruments,” said Cronin, who sat next to her 3-year-old daughter, Samantha.

To mark holidays, they sing special songs such as paying homage to pumpkins during Halloween.

“We’ll do holiday songs,” Cronin said.

“We’re an informal group,” she said. “It’s an interactive mommy-kid thing.”

They started off sitting on a floor in a circle Nov. 18, singing about the wheels of the bus going round and round. Next they sang about an itsy bitsy spider, then turned their attention to Tiny Tim the turtle and later sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

The kids and adults then got up on their feet to do some walking, skipping, tip-toeing, marching and running around in a circle.
