Twenty-six American flags on veterans’ graves were vandalized at the Odd Fellows Cemetery off Bloom Road in Mahoning Township, Montour County.
This latest incident was the second to occur at the cemetery, according to county Veterans Affairs Director Doug Resseguie.
Resseguie replaced the flags and broken wooden poles Tuesday afternoon.
He said shafts of some flags were broken, and in other instances, flags were ripped off the wooden shafts in an area along the fence row near the Geisinger Mausoleum.
Resseguie said he was told of a similar incident several weeks ago involving a dozen flags on veterans’ graves. He gave flags to a man who regularly visits the cemetery to replace them.
This latest incident was reported to the cemetery association, which notified Mahoning Township police.
It costs his office 50 cents for each flag.
“This is disrespect for veterans’ graves. It’s a shame. People don’t understand what they’re doing. Obviously, it’s vandalism,” he said.
