Danville United Way kicks off 2013-14 fundraising campaign

DANVILLE — The annual Danville Area United Way campaign has started to help 17 nonprofit agencies provide a variety of services to the area.

The 2013-14 campaign theme is Choose to Care: “What Matters” Children Matter, according to United Way Executive Director Francis Moyer.

“The United Way is very involved in early childhood issues. Supporting the United Way helps the community more,” he said.

The campaign is in the process of seeking contributions from businesses and their employees. Geisinger Medical Center — the largest employer in the area — will kick off its campaign the end of this month.

Last year’s campaign brought in $189,900 with $121,311 going to the agencies, which are 4-H Development, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Central Susquehanna Sight Services, Columbia-Montour Boy Scout Council, Danville Area Community Center, Danville Red Cross Chapter, Danville Child Development Center, Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, Mental Health Association of the Central Susquehanna Valley, Montour County Historical Society, Northern Montour Recreation Association, Suncom Industries, Sunnybrook Playground Association, The Gate House,  Salvation Army, Thomas Beaver Free Library and The Women’s Center.

Without people’s support of the agencies, they could not do all they do for our community, Moyer said.

“Now is the time to give back to your community,” Moyer said.

The United Way relies heavily on volunteers including its board members.

A group of people, from Maria Joseph Continuing Care, recently volunteered to stuff campaign material into envelopes at The Meadows. In two days, they stuffed more than 5,000 pieces of mail to be sent to homes and businesses.

“This works well. They take great pride in volunteering,” Moyer said.

Participating were Barbara Lipscomb, Ruth Rarig, Isabelle Scaran, Grace VanDerslice, Marlene Leide, Mildred Fetterman, Mary Ann Cieslikowski, Marie Monkiewicz, Vera McGuire, Ann Vestonich, Gloria and Bud Breech, Rita Olaf, Floretta Babcock, Joyce Bartholomew, Jason Milks and Sister Christopher Godlewski. Employees assisting were Christine Fornof, Denise Toczlowski and Brenda Whitenight.

Contributions should be sent to the Danville Area United Way at 116 Mill St., Danville.
