Riverside considering chipper rental to help with yard waste

— RIVERSIDE – Borough council is considering renting a chipper at some point in the future to help Riverside residents dispose of yard waste.

Peter Fleming, president of borough council, emphasized that the matter was still only under discussion but that it would help with requests they have been receiving from newer residents to provide a means of disposing of tree limbs, bushes and similar organic waste. The idea was first suggested by council member John LaMotte in September.

“We get quite a number of limbs that fall during a windstorm and have to be disposed of,” Fleming said. Some residents burn tree limbs and similar yard waste, but in general that is becoming less acceptable in the region due to the smoke it creates, he said.

The council has looked into prices to rent a chipper and has found they vary widely. “It’s not cheap … it would be in the hundreds (of dollars) to have one for a couple days,” Fleming said.

Federal funds that could have helped start a recycling program or rent a chipper dried up about four years ago.
