Volunteers Wanted for Red Cross Month

DANVILLE — March is Red Cross month, making it a perfect time to volunteer to help out community members.

“We’re always looking for volunteers,” said Rita Inklovich, director of the Danville, Bloomsburg and Berwick Red Cross chapters. Volunteers are sent out whenever there is a disaster, such as a fire, to help arrange for lodgings, clothes and food for victims.

“It’s truly a fulfilling way to give back to your community. Many times, these are your neighbors who are involved. There’s nothing that can replace having a friendly face there who can help you with those basic needs right away,” said Inklovich.

Disaster relief is the main mission of the Red Cross, with volunteers working especially hard during the Tropical Storm Lee flood of fall 2011. “We pray we don’t have another one (flood) any time soon,” said Inklovich.

In addition to disaster help, Red Cross offers ongoing safety courses throughout the year, such as CPR and first-aid. They also provide emergency messaging for military families in the hopes of getting service men and women home for family crises.

The Red Cross also appreciates financial donations from community members, said Inklovich.
