Montour County Gate House gets TLC

MAHONING TWP. — Residents of The Gate House shelter for the homeless will be cozy in quilts donated by a church group.

Alta Kirkner and Randi Spayd, of the TLC Quilters, presented five quilts to shelter Executive Director Tom Dougher on Monday.

Most of the quilts were for children. One larger quilt was donated.

“We started with quilts for kids and received a request for larger quilts,” Spayd said.

Dougher said they give a quilt to a small child when a family moves in. “It’s like a safety blanket so they can feel comfortable,” he said.

When the family moves out, the child takes the quilt to their new home.

The shelter for the homeless has received nearly 40 quilts from the group.

They usually donate them once or twice a year.

“Two ladies from Welsh Heights do most of the work,” said Spayd of the group, based at Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville.

“I cut the squares. They do the tops. We pin them together and they finish the quilts,” she said of the women who didn’t want to be identified.

The group has been making quilts for about seven years.

They also stitch quilts for people staying at The Women’s Center and people aided by the Montour County Public Assistance Office.
