Surprise: St. Joseph poster contest winner expected trouble

DANVILLE — When Nick Dorkoski heard his name being called to report to the school office, he wasn’t sure what to think.

“I thought I might be in trouble,” the fifth-grader at St. Joseph School said Tuesday.

Much to his surprise, he discovered he won first place in an anti-drug poster contest involving fifth-graders at his school, Lourdes and Meadowbrook Christian schools.

The 11-year-old received a $50 gift card from Karen P. Wood, chief experience officer of Service 1st Federal Credit Union, and a certificate from Harold Hurst, chief of staff for state Rep. Kurt Masser.

Hurst said Nick’s poster will be on display, along with other winning works, in the Rotunda in Harrisburg.

On his poster, Nick created a “good choice” blimp, along with other pictures, and titled it “Too Smart to Start. He is a son of Lisa and Tony Dorkoski of Elysburg.
