Crash wrecks Route 54 railing, sends dog running

— VALLEY TWP – About 70 feet of railing was stripped away from the side of Route 54 after a driver lost control of his Ford pick-up truck and sent it rolling down an embankment.

The driver, who said he lost control on a patch of ice, was able to leave the overturned vehicle after the accident, according to Valley Township Fire Chief Mike Kull. “He got himself up and over the bank and was standing on the road,” Kull said.

The chief did not have an identity for the man, who was taken to Geisinger Medical Center by Danville Ambulance for treatment.

The accident took place at approximately 6 p.m. along a curve in Route 54, near a tree-line section of the route north of the intersection with McCracken Road.

The pick-up truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Also in the car at the time of the collision was a small dog belonging to the driver, which ran up a nearby hill following the crash. Firefighters retrieved the animal, which appeared unhurt and was calmly sitting in an emergency worker’s arms after the ordeal. Kull said the animal would likely stay at the fire department or with a station member until family members could pick it up.

Traffic was reduced to one lane around the accident. Also responding were Danville's fire police, state police from the Milton barracks and the Liberty Township Fire Department. State police had not released a cause of the crash as of this writing.
