DANVILLE — The first time proved a charm for members of the Danville High School Concert Band.

The band not only won first in its division, the musicians also won the Grand Champion Award.

About 100 members of the band won in their division at the Music Showcase Festival in Williamsburg, Va.

Because they had the highest score of any instrumental ensemble during the festival, they were named grand champions, said band director Jeff Smith.

He said a total of 15 to 20 groups competed.

This was the first time the Danville band entered this festival.

Band members won the accolades Friday night including being first in their division which is determined by the size of the school and a larger trophy for being chosen as overall winner.

“They played really well. They really did a nice job,” Smith said. This is his first year serving as Danville band director.

The two selections the band played for the competition are from their concert to be presented May 3. The high school band and eighth grade band will present the concert at 8 p.m. in the high school gym.

Band members traveled by tour buses to the festival. Band boosters helped fund the trip and students contributed some to the trip, Smith said.

The return trip included a visit Saturday to Busch Gardens and the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Sunday.
