Expect extra security at Danville marathons on Saturday

DANVILLE — While there is no reason to believe there should be any concerns during Saturday’s marathon and half-marathon, extra security measures are being instituted out of caution.

“This is to keep everybody as safe as we can within reason,” said Montour Area Recreation Commission Director Bob Stoudt.

The additional security is a result of bombings at the Boston Marathon.

His announcement came following a meeting Monday with Danville Police Chief Eric Gill, Danville Public Works Director John Hack, Tom Dipasquale of the Danville Business Alliance and other Danville public works personnel. They discussed safety measures along with traffic control during the races.

Stoudt said every checked racer’s bag will contain an identifying mark so recreation commission officials know who dropped it.

“Any unmarked and unattended bags, we will deal with as needed,” he said.

Danville police will provide roving patrols during the day.

There will be additional law enforcement security measures in place during the day but Stoudt declined to say specifically what they would be.

The marathon begins at 7 a.m. at the Montour County Courthouse.

The half-marathon starts at 9 a.m. at the courthouse with the runners heading down Mill Street to officially open the Spring Fling.
