Cyber school proposal to be presented to Danville school board

DANVILLE — A proposal for a cyber school program will be presented to Danville school board members at their May 14 meeting.

The proposal, created by district superintendent Cheryl Latorre and Danville High School’s assistant principal Jen Gurski, will offer a blended model whereby students can take online course in addition to ones in the district’s schools.

A vendor for the online program will be presented to the board, said Latorre, as well as a comprehensive curriculum which can be used for the cyber component as well as providing remediation, academic enrichment and additional course selection for district students.

District officials are interested in offering a cyber program in part because it could bring back some of the approximately 48 students who left the district to enroll in charter schools and online programs. Annually, Danville is spending roughly $400,000 to $500,000 to enroll those district students in outside programs.
