DANVILLE — In the U.S. nearly half of all ATV related deaths and injuries occur in children under the age of 16. Between 1982 and 2002, there were 5,239 ATV deaths, of which 38 percent involved children.
The general surgery department at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville has continued to support free ATV safety courses for kids for the past several years. Geisinger became involved in promoting the training in 2010 after the hospital saw a large increase in the amount of children who were injured in ATV accidents.
Certified safety instructors from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources teach the courses to children ages 8 to 15.
In the past few years, donations to Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger have helped fund this program for area youth.
For more information on the safety courses, call the Northumberland County Planning Department at (570) 988-4220, ext. 4119. Classes are offered every spring and class size is limited.
