— DANVILLE – A new group of singing second-graders have been organized to help bring music to the rest of Danville.
The Music Makers were formed at the start of this school year by Danville Primary School’s music teacher Vanessa DeVett. “We wanted to find a way to take our music outside the four walls of our building to the community … to those who would benefit from us brining them our music,” she said.
There are 20 students in the traveling group. They practice three times a week for half an hour after school.
The Music Makers have performed at nursing homes and at local events, including the Columbia Mall’s Night of Giving on Nov. 10.
“Everyone’s been really receptive,” DeVett said. “I don’t know of that many young performing groups around. I think its exciting that kids this young are getting that experience.” The reaction has been particularly good at nursing homes, where residents really appreciate the time they spend with young people.
