VALLEY TWP. — The Danville Municipal Authority has given two municipalities a deadline of Jan. 30 to connect to the Danville sewage system.
The deadline was included in letters, dated Nov. 11, to the Valley Township Municipal Authority and the Cooper Township Municipal Authority, Robert Buehner Jr., Valley Township supervisors’ solicitor, said at the supervisors’ meeting Wednesday night. He is also solicitor for the Cooper and Valley authorities.
Buehner said the Danville authority stated it wants Valley Township to connect to the Danville system by the deadline or it plans to charge the township more to connect. Valley Township had been negotiating with Danville to connect the section of the township which has municipal sewer service to the Danville system.
The Danville authority and Danville Borough Council recently voted to opt out of a plan to regionalize sewage systems. The Danville officials said regionalization would not benefit Danville residents.
Buehner said the Danville authority wants Valley Township to pay about $950,000 to connect to the system and to also pay rates calculated by the Danville authority.
He said the Cooper Township authority is looking at alternatives for the part of the township that was to connect to the Danville system.
Buehner said Danville officials scrapped the plan, being discussed for at least two years, despite SEDA-COG planning to make a presentation before the borough council and borough authority.
“The engineer who represents the regional group valued Danville’s collection system at zero dollars. They want to charge everyone a tapping fee based on millions of dollars,” Buehner said.
“That is the one major sticking point for Valley Township and the Danville authority. We’re talking millions of dollars,” he said.
Valley Township Supervisors Vice Chairman Walt Rupert said negotiations could possibly resume after three new Danville council members take office in January.
The Montour County commissioners said Tuesday they were disappointed with the Danville vote.
The commissioners had organized a sewer summit meeting after receiving a request from a Mahoning Township official on the possibility of forming a regional sewer authority.
Commissioners Chairman Trevor Finn said a regional sewer meeting would have been held two days after the Danville vote last week and officials’ questions would have been answered during the canceled meeting.
