— DANVILLE – School students have begun collecting canned and boxed foods for the annual Feed A Friend charity, which provides Thanksgiving meals for needy local families.
Boxes for donations have been set out at each of the district’s four school buildings, with other locations set up at businesses around Montour County.
Feed A Friend provides Thanksgiving meals for about 400 families, or 1,000 people, in Montour County, said John Eckhart, director of Montour County’s Feed A Friend program.
The schools tend to be the largest source of donations for the drive, Eckhart said. “The schools are unbelievable, they’re just wonderful.”
Christian Pegg, a history teacher at Danville High School, has one of several classrooms where a donation box has been set up. The classes just started collecting this week, he said, so donations are just beginning to trickle in. He expects more donations as the weeks go on. Each of the approximately 20 classrooms with a resource period during the day will be collecting canned foods to donate for Feed A Friend through Nov. 21.
The high school has been collection Thanksgiving donations for Feed A Friend for several years, Pegg said. “We’re just trying to aid that process.”
