DANVILLE — Members of the Danville Arts Council are preparing for their first art show this weekend, during the Arts and Crafts Fair.
The show, titled “Beginnings,” will run Friday, Sept. 6 through Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Pi-Art Squared Gallery at the rear of 14 East Mahoning Street. The exhibit will also be open from Friday, Sept. 13, to Sunday, Sept. 15. The exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays.
“This art show does represent the beginning of the arts council. As an entity, we’ve been growing for several months but this is the first public outreach,” said council member Scott Richardson.
As of Wednesday night, there were about 30 different pieces submitted for display. Artists are from Danville and its surrounding communities.
“Our intent is to highlight the talent that is in this area,” he said. “There is a lot going on in this relatively small community.”
The council had originally planned to coincide its first show with the Iron Heritage Festival, but scheduling prevented this.
Launching with the Arts and Crafts Fair gives the council a chance to showcase local talent during a time when many visitors and residents will have the chance to see it. It also lets the town emphasize the “arts” half of the fair, which Richardson had felt was underrepresented in the past.
On Sept. 7, Pi-Art Squared Gallery will also have refreshments from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and live music from noon to 4 p.m.
Some of the art on display will also be available for purchase.
In the future, the council wants to continue working directly with local artists and hold some of artistic event every month. The council also hopes to host art lessons for children and adults in the future.
“Our goal is to highlight all of the artistic talent that is in the community, to connect art loving people in the community with art producing people and support that wherever we can,” Richardson said. “This is Danville, we have a lot of artistic talent here. Let’s be proud of it.”
