Marshal: Fatal fire cause still unknown

DANVILLE — A state police fire marshal plans to further investigate the cause of a fire that killed a retired borough man Monday afternoon.

“At this point, it is still undetermined,” Tpr. Kirk Renn, of the Milton barracks, said Thursday.

“At some point, I will be back at the scene,” he said. The cause is not considered suspicious.

The blaze killed Eugene “Gene” Yohn, 88, a retired truck driver from 11 Cross St.

His wife, Doris, and dog were able to escape through the front door. His wife told officials she thought her husband was behind. His body was found in an enclosed side porch of the two-story home.

The fire is believed to have started in the enclosed side porch area, Renn said.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn previously said preliminary findings indicated a blanket being warmed in a microwave started to smoke and may have been thrown onto the porch.

Renn said he hadn’t determined the loss of property but added it was a total loss.

With him Monday afternoon at the scene were fire marshals Cpl. Nick Loffredo, of the Montoursville barracks, and Tpr. Ken Riggle, of the Lamar barracks.
