Cough syrup case sent to Montour County Court

DANVILLE — A supermarket pharmacist caught on tape drinking cough syrup and placing it back on the shelf will face Montour County Court action.

Terry Donmoyer, 58, of 11 Fulton St., waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday before Montour County District Judge Marvin Shrawder.

Danville police charged him after a district asset protection manager for Weis Markets notified police of increases in orders for hydrocodone cough syrup for the Danville Weis Markets pharmacy at 600 Continental Blvd.

For incidents from November through January, Donmoyer was charged with   possession of a controlled substance, theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property.

A security camera video showed Donmoyer entering the pharmacy daily, removing a bottle of cough syrup from the shelf, drinking from the bottle and putting the bottle back on the shelf.

Donmoyer admitted to taking other medications for a sore throat, police said.

Medications taken were valued at $85.

According to the charges, Donmoyer admitted he drank from the cough syrup bottle because of sinus issues. He said he wasn’t prescribed the cough syrup and also removed amoxicillin, sertraline, carbamazepine, metformin and fluconazole from the pharmacy for his own use, police said.

Donmoyer told police he forgot to take his own medication before coming to work and ingested sertraline, carbamaazepine and metformin from the pharmacy.

He told police he had valid prescriptions for the medications and said he took amoxicillin and fluconazole for a sore throat.

He said he began having sinus issues in November and began to sip cough syrup every day before work with the sinus issues clearing up in January, according to the charges.
