River Front Park leaders: Danville community can help with cleanup, care

DANVILLE — River Front Park co-chairs Harriett Perez and Maighread Kelly want their tract of green to be around for a long time.

“We want to see it survive beyond our children,” Kelly said.

The two were named to the position this spring, after former director Kay Jones retired.

One of their most notable changes is in organizing cleanup and maintenance of the park. Formerly, two to three people each week would work on the park, but this past spring Perez and Kelly decided to have one big spring cleanup during the last weekend of April.

“We had a wonderful turnout,” Kelly said. There were about 40 to 50 people there over the course of the weekend, and all the work was done in about six hours of work.

The rest of the season, different co-leaders and volunteers will be in charge of maintaining the park’s appearance. Jones will have a group from a local 4H chapter who will help with small tasks such as pruning box wood plants.

The summer season will likely return to a series of smaller cleanup days, but fall will follow spring’s pattern of having one or two big days, Perez and Kelly said.

“It’s a community park, all are welcome at any time,” Kelly said. People are free to walk along the park and clean and weed it any time they feel it necessary.

The duo want to emphasize that maintaining the park is a town effort, not just the responsibility of the master gardeners.

“We want the community to have involvement,” Perez said.

The two are open to suggestions from Danville residents and anybody who wants to volunteer for projects, such as planting and watering annuals.

“We’re looking for the manpower,” Kelly said.

Kelly and Perez have a few small renovation plans for now. They are considering the addition of a garden shed, and are also looking for a volunteer with a bucket truck to help put up decorations on the park’s Christmas tree this coming winter.

Anybody with a bucket truck and willing to help can reach Perez and Kelly via borough representative Dan Knorr, at 570-275-3091, extension 3.
