Valley supervisors want community reaction to proposed traffic signals

VALLEY TWP. — The Valley Township supervisors want to know what people think about a plan to install a new traffic signal at an intersection with a high accident rate and upgrading the traffic signal at the McDonald’s Restaurant intersection at Old Valley School Road and Route 54.

They are seeking comments at their meeting which begins at 7 p.m. June 11 in the township building.

The Montour County commissioners previously asked residents to voice their  comments about the project.

The new signal, at Routes 642 and 54 in Valley Township, would be funded by the federal government with either Valley Township or the county being responsible for maintenance and electric costs.

Commissioner Jerry Ward said PennDOT proposes the new signal for safety reasons for traffic coming from the Lewisburg area.

The project is estimated at more than $1 million.

Commissioner Jerry Ward previously said the county favors signs being installed so drivers on Route 54 heading toward Danville stay in the right lane and traffic at the blinking light can enter Route 54.

He said a new traffic signal will be installed at the McDonald’s intersection which will include new street lights.

The county pays to maintain that signal with financial assistance from hotels in that area. He expects the electric cost to be reduced with LED lights to be installed.

The commissioners plan to decide by mid-June if they want to pursue the project.

Work would begin in 2015.
