Danville students, staff practiced severe weather drill before hail storm

DANVILLE — Students and staff in the Danville Area School District conduct all-weather drills about three times a year so the students have practice reaching their building’s safety areas.

“We just had one (a drill) a week ago,” Superintendent Cheryl Latorre said. “The kids know the procedures, how to get there.”

At the Danville Primary School, the area used is an interior hallway. In all buildings, the safety zones are locations removed from doors, windows and other glass sources.

“I’d like to thank teachers, staff and the parents for being understanding,” she said. Students at Danville schools were kept in safe areas and the end of school was delayed up to 30 minutes as the district put the drills to use during Thursday’s hail storm

Some cars were damaged in the Danville High School, Danville Primary School and administrative office parking areas. None of the buildings were damages and nobody was hurt, Latorre said.

Latorre and school board president Allan Schappert both said they could not remember the last time the district needed to take an emergency weather action.
