Crews sop up leaking hydraulic fluid

DANVILLE — About three gallons of hydraulic fluid leaked from a large yellow hydraulic lift which was about 12 feet from a storm sewer drain leading to Sechler’s Run.

The leak was discovered at about 3 p.m. Wednesday by employees of Knuckle Busters Customs, at 354 Ferry St. The boom was parked in the alley behind the business.

Firefighters from the Washies and Continental companies placed a white boom and absorbent pads on the fluid. They also used a drying material to absorb the leakage.

Danville Patrolman Joseph Eister said the boom appeared to be disabled. He didn’t know who owned the equipment.

“Thank God it didn’t get there,” he said, referring to the storm drain.

Danville Assistant Fire Chief John Buckenberger said the boom had been sitting there since about 11 a.m. after being parked there by contractor John Pickin who was driving it to a job site.

Buckenberger said they were calling for a wrecker to remove the equipment.

Also responding were Danville fire police and a Danville ambulance.
