Master gardeners visit Danville area community plots

COOPER TWP. — Despite rainy conditions, Penn State Master master gardeners Cinda Printzenhoff and Amanda Ballengee met with a dozen people from the area who signed up for community garden plots last week.

Printzenhoff and Ballengee also provided donated plants to the gardeners at the community garden behind the Danville Child Development Center in Cooper Township. Project coordinator Cindy Powers also provided plants started from seed cilantro, basil, tomatoes, squash and beans.

In discussing weed control, Ballengee recommended mulching with cardboard or newspapers and adding straw on top.

Powers said she used bagged grass last year that worked well.

Last year was the first year for the community garden.

Mark LaMotte, of Mahoning Township, his son Christian and his finacee, Alyssa Gundrum, of Danville, have reserved three plots.

Christian LaMotte said the family had done some gardening in the past but it has been a long time. They plan to make it a family project.

“It will be fun to get together after work,” Gundrum said.

They prepared a list of plants they plan to place in their plots including peppers, squash, Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, tomatoes and sunflowers.

Christian LaMotte said they expect to use most of the produce when it is fresh and will do some canning.

“We live in town and don’t have the space for a garden,” he said.

They expected to start planting this weekend.

For her plot, Joan Sarisky, of Mahoning Township, chose some tomatoes, basil and squash which were donated. She will also be planting corn.

She said she had gardened a long time ago but “very little” recently.

People interested in a plot should contact Michelle Jenkins at the center at 570-275-4047. A $2 charge is asked for a plot measuring 10 feet by 10 feet.
