The parade needs you

DANVILLE – Participants are needed for this year’s annual Iron Heritage Parade that forms at a new location.

“We need marchers,” parade chairperson Jane VonBlohn said.

“Everybody is welcome,” she said.

As of Wednesday, she didn’t have any floats signed up yet.

There is no charge to enter and monetary prizes are awarded.

Categories include floats, Boy scouts, novelty groups, costumes, Girl Scouts and antique fire, farm and street vehicles.

Entries should relate in some way to the years from 1800 to 1950.

The parade will form at 6 p.m. July 18 at Paper Magic, at Market and Wall streets.

The previous formation location was the Iron Town Commerce Center.

The parade will move at 7 p.m. and continues along East Market Street to Mill Street and Lower Mulberry Street.

Among the parade participants will be honored guest and award-winning author Jeff Shaara, 22 Civil War generals with 17 women, James Getty Portraying President Abraham Lincoln, the Danville Community Band, the Excelsior Cornet Band and the Union Fife and Drum Corps.

VonBlohn hopes to attract another band.

Also participating will be Danville American Legion Post 40 Color Guard and several other entries.

In the past, churches, scout troops, businesses and organizations have taken part.

Last year’s parade featured three divisions.

Parade applications are available at Cole’s Hardware, Beiter’s Department Store, the Danville Municipal Building and the Iron Heritage Festival company store.

Entries should be received by July 11 and submitted to VonBlohn at 300 Honeymoon St. She can be reached at 570-275-4863 for more information.
