Birthday surprise: Alice Metzger celebrates 90th

Since Alice Metzger loves to make crafts and decorations, Montour County Senior Center Director Robbie Kilmer told her they would be making summer crafts on Tuesday.

“It was a disguise,” Kilmer said of the surprise birthday party they threw for Metzger’s 90th birthday instead.

There were two green signs on the front doors of the center in Danville, urging people to wish her a happy birthday and to give her a hug.

Inside was a large sign announcing she was 90 years young.

“This is such a surprise,” Metzger said as the seniors sang “Happy Birthday” to her when she walked into the center.

Kilmer’s daughter, Ashley Kilmer, made a satin sash with “birthday queen” and “90” in glitter for Metzger to wear. Kilmer also presented her with a crown and Metzger had a special chair to use that day.

They later ate cake in her honor.

“Alice isn’t going to do any work today,” said Kilmer. “She’s one of the most active seniors here.”

Metzger makes many crafts at the center and creates crafts for her home and for others.

She also decorates the center, including ornaments on a Christmas tree that change with the seasons and the holidays.

Because she makes a special sauce and spaghetti, she has volunteered to cook for lunch Tuesday when Bloomsburg seniors visit the Danville center.

Kilmer said Metzger is in charge of the lunch, which they plan to use as a fundraiser.

Crafts made at the center are also used to raise money for the center.

Metzger and her husband, Aaron, try to make it to the center daily.

They ride a Montour County Transit bus.

A resident of Mahoning Township the past 16 years, Metzger previously lived in Philadelphia. She is retired from working at the Robert Bruce company, which made sweaters.

She also takes care of her husband, who has Parkinson’s disease.
