Riverside to smooth access road off Scenic

RIVERSIDE — Borough council members have agreed to smooth out a sewer access road off Scenic Drive used by two households on Hillside Estates.

Resident Tom McGreevy attended the council’s June 16 meeting to request the borough’s assistance in repairing the road, which had developed a large rut due to water runoff during the winter.

“There are crevices in there right now that a pickup truck could run into,” McGreevy said.

McGreevy and his neighbor use the unnamed road, which is used by the borough to access a sewer manhole, to return to their houses.

“We all use that roadway to get to Route 54, that’s where our cars are all parked,” he said.

When leaving, they take a separate road that leads downhill from Scenic Drive, but it is harder to navigate driving uphill.

“It’s a little bit tough on the little cars,” McGreevy said.

Council president John Novak said the borough would send their street department to smooth out the road next week and make it easier to drive on. He did not want to commit to additional repairs because the road exists in a “no man’s land” due to the original property owner not deeding the right of way. The council did not want to set a precedent of repairing property that does not belong to them, Novak said.

“Whatever you do for one, another will want. We have to be careful we don’t overstep and do something that is a personal thing versus a community thing,” he said.

If an easy, long-term fix is available, the borough will do it, he said, but would not do repeated repairs.

Novak said the borough uses the access road only sporadically.
