Scouts race on Riverside street

RIVERSIDE — The trick to the cubmobile race is to never take your eyes off the finish line.

“Every driver that looks over veers … And then they lose focus,” said Troy Roberts, chair of Riverside’s Cub Scout Pack 33.

Starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Montour Street, from Dewart Street to Sunbury Road, was turned into a race track for the annual cubmobile race, featuring racers from local Cub Scout packs 139, 37, 30 and 33.

While the top speed of the wooden carts is only about two to three miles per hour, it’s still enough to give the kids a rush of excitement. “I haven’t met a kid yet who complained about it,” Roberts said.

And while one racer, Hunter Kelchner, of Danville’s Pack 37, did end up veering his cart off the road, the seven-year old was unhurt, unfazed and eager to race again.

The first-place winner was John Price, of Pack 33. In second was his twin brother, Carl Price, also of Pack 33, and in third was another Pack 33 member, Luke Huron.

The wooden cubmobiles, steered by a length of rope that moves the cart’s wheels as it drives downhill, are made by the Scouts with the help of parents.

“A lot of the packs put together a build day. It takes them about a day to put them together,” Roberts said.
