Danville downtown upper floors project takes first steps

DANVILLE — A process aimed at spurring renovations of second and third floors of downtown apartments got initial approval from Danville Borough Council on Tuesday.

Council members allowed for a public hearing to be held sometime in June on the merits of the changes.

Following the hearing, the council would vote on the changes to borough ordinances, said Dan Knorr, borough administrator of governmental affairs.

The proposed changes are increasing the location radius for required off-site parking spaces from 250 to 500 feet, allowing for non-ownership of required off-site parking spaces as long as annual proof of access is submitted to the borough and changing the minimum requirement for off-street parking spaces for single-bedroom dwelling units from two spaces to one.

Knorr said the proposals originated with the Danville Business Alliance and have been endorsed by the borough’s code and zoning committee and the borough planning commission.

The proposals would slightly loosen parking restrictions and encourage development of apartments in the central business district, Knorr said.
