Danville school phone glitch may have hailed firefighters

DANVILLE — High school administrators are chalking up a glitch in their phone system as the cause of a misplaced fire alarm Wednesday afternoon.

There is no evidence that the fire alarm was pulled by anybody in the building, and no lights, alarms or other signals went off within the building before emergency personnel arrived on scene, according to Principal Lee Gump.

“There was no indication from the inside that there was a problem whatsoever,” Gump said. Police and firefighters arrived shortly after a fire alarm was reported by Montour County emergency management at the high school at approximately 1:50 p.m. “They were here before we knew anything was going on.”

Emergency personnel stayed for about 25 minutes while district personnel checked their system. Technicians from Siemens, the district’s phone system provider, were at the high school later that day. “We believe it has something to do with our phone lines,” Gump said.

A weather emergency and fire drill took place at 12:50 p.m. All systems worked normally.

“We just ran it yesterday and everything worked fine,” Gump said.

Later that day, however, the school noticed a problem with their phone lines when their fax machines stopped working, he said.
