Montour County Senior Citizens Center may get 20-year lease

DANVILLE — Plans continue to use Montour County Community Development Block Grant Funds to finance a long-term lease for the Montour Senior Center in Danville.

The Montour County commissioners on Tuesday approved seeking requests for proposals for legal services to negotiate a lease with Danville borough which owns the building housing the center at 500 W. Mahoning St.

The 20-year proposed lease would assist the Columbia-Montour Area Aging Office with rental payments.

Naval memorial

The commissioners are also moving ahead with plans for a memorial to honor those who served at sea at River Front Park along the Susquehanna River.

Commissioners Vice Chairman Jack Gerst said donations will be sought if approvals are received for the monument.

At last week’s Danville Borough Council meeting, council members referred the proposal to the parks and recreation committee to determine where the memorial will be placed. Public Works Director John Hack said the proposed site lies along the flood protection system and approval would be needed from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The council’s parks and recreation committee will meet at 3 p.m. May 28 in the municipal building to review information on the proposed location and the preliminary design. Recommendations will be made with final approval by the borough council.

Commissioners Chairman Trevor Finn said commissioners will ask U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta if there is something nautical-related the county could use to honor those who served at sea.

Transportation projects

Commissioner Jerry Ward said the county has on display, in the commissioners’ conference room, projects listed in the Transportation Improvement Program. Projects are updated every two years by the board, of which Ward is a member, along with federal officials, PennDOT and county representatives.

The packet is available for public inspection through June 9.

Eagle Scout

The commissioners recognized Patrick Keehan for receiving his Eagle Scout award. “Congratulations on behalf of county residents,” Finn said, adding Patrick exemplifies a positive image toward scouting.
