Riverside: Natural gas hookup costs not outrageous

RIVERSIDE – Members of borough council have drafted a letter to Riverside residents clarifying the requirements needed to bring natural gas to the community and encouraging citizens to make their voice heard.

Earlier reports were misunderstood by some residents, who believed that the cost of natural gas to their household would be $10,000. What gas provider UGI wants is to reduce its installation and maintenance costs down to $10,000 per household, said council member John Domanski.

The current cost per household to UGI is $11,200. The borough is currently investigating ways to bring that price down.

Residents interested in bringing natural gas to Riverside are asked to share their address with UGI at UGI.com/getgas, or by calling 1-800-276-2722. Expressing interest in the natural gas service is not an obligation to pay for it, clarified council member John LaMotte.

If at least 356 Riverside properties express interest in the service, UGI has a much higher chance of bringing it to Riverside, according to the council.

Should natural gas be brought to the borough, the surcharge is estimated to be between $40 and $50 a month.
