Trio plans to create underground ice house

RIVERSIDE — Three area men are taking on a project for Danville’s annual Iron Heritage Festival.

They plan to build an underground ice house next to The English Garden on the Riverside side of the Danville-Riverside Bridge.

They expect to add 300-pound blocks of ice insulated with sawdust.

Ken Kremser, Brad Becker and Van Wagner will be spearheading the project.

In bygone years, people cut ice from rivers, creeks, lakes and ponds and stored it in insulated buildings with some of the buildings being underground. The ice was then covered with sawdust.

During warm weather, the ice was sold to businesses and residents for use as refrigeration and to make desserts such as ice cream.

After refrigeration came into use in the 1940s, the practice continued.

Several locations in the Danville area were used to harvest ice. They included the Susquehanna River near Front Street and the Lawrence Dam near Beaver Place.
