DANVILLE – The Central Susquehanna PA Committee of the Fresh Air Fund will welcome 17 New York City children as they arrive July 1 in Bloomsburg.
Volunteer host families share their summers for up to two weeks with the children. Host families are from Benton, Danville, Millville, Bloomsburg, Shickshinny, Wapwallopen and Catawissa.
The children, ages 6 to 18, leave behind the city streets to run barefoot in the grass or see stars at night. Some are leaving home for the first time while others are returning to visit the same host families for consecutive summers.
Each summer, more than 4,000 youngsters visit host families in rural, suburban and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Since it began in 1877, the program has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children.
