Geisinger to add 750,000-gallon storage tank

DANVILLE — A new storage tank will add an extra 750,000 gallons of water to Geisinger Medical Center’s campus.

“We’re probably tripling the supply we have on hand,” said Bob Markowski, associate vice president of facilities administration, at the Wednesday meeting of Geisinger’s authority board.

The campus currently has a water storage tank of 500,000 gallons, used for both drinking water and for fire protection systems. The new, larger tank, which will be located near the Life Flight helipad, will be dedicated solely to potable water while the current tank will be switched over exclusively to fire protection service.

“We continue to add new square footage, this will be in response to that increased demand,” Markowski said.

Construction on the $1.5 million storage tank began this month. Markowski expects the new storage tank to be operational in the fall.

According to Al Neuner, vice president of facilities operations for Geisinger Medical Center, the campus uses more than 100 million gallons water a year. About 400,000 gallons are used per day during the summer and between 250,000 and 300,000 per day in the winter. The increased amount during the summer is due to “evaporative loads,” according to Neuner.
