Three-vehicle crash on Route 54 sends three to hospital

— DANVILLE — Witnesses say a Chevrolet Tahoe was briefly airborne after it collided with a pickup truck and before it struck an Eastern Lift Co. van in a three-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Route 54 near Liberty Valley Road.

Three people were taken to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following the collisions near an intersection that has been the site of 25 accidents since 2009, according to state Department of Transportation records.

Elia Sanchez, of Sunbury, driver of the Tahoe, was taken to Geisinger, as were a man and woman traveling in the pickup truck.

Elenne Sanchez, of Northumberland, sister-in-law of Elia Sanchez, arrived at the scene following the accident.

Elenne Sanchez says she was told her brother-in-law’s truck briefly had all four of its wheels off the ground right before it hit the Eastern Lift van.

Witness Steve Strausser, of Danville, said he saw the pickup truck continue after the collision until it stopped on grass near the westbound lane of Route 54.

When the Tahoe was struck, it also hit a yellow van owned by Eastern Lift Truck Co. that was also driving in the eastbound lane.

The Tahoe came to a stop near the intersection, while the Eastern Lift van continued to travel several hundred feet down the eastbound lane before stopping.

State police could not identify the two occupants of the pickup truck. The Eastern Lift truck was operated by Eastern Lift employee Sean Steinbacher, who was uninjured.

Also responding were Liberty Township Fire Department and Valley Township Fire Department.

Valley Township signed an agreement  to allow PennDOT to install a traffic signal at the intersection by next year.
