Urgent mission: Help Good Samaritan center restock

DANVILLE — The Good Samaritan Mission Center needs items so it can restock supplies at its store at 327A Ferry St.

Needed for children are summer clothes sizes newborn to size 16, socks and underwear. Men’s jeans, shorts and bathing suits are also requested.

Sheets and blankets, towels and washcloths and hygiene items are also being sought.

They can be taken to the center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

As of March, the center served 200 clothing donors, had 1,220 visits by clients for clothing, gave away clothing to 643 people and distributed 65 coats.

Nine people received furniture.

The center aided more than 1,400 people with items including clothes to furniture.

Forty-nine clients were aided who were considered to be in a crisis.

From January through March, the crisis fund was able to help 14 seniors and 28 families with financial assistance to cover fuel for heat or help with rent equaling thousands of dollars in financial assistance.

The center also distributed socks, underwear, boots and jackets to families in need with children through the Danville Area School District’s giveaway program. In January, the center contributed $1,000 to the diaper bank at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church.

A total of 4,791 food packages were distributed through Many Hands Helping Others which provides food to youngsters so they will have adequate food on weekends.

Local businesses donate supplies for the program. Local groups and families donate financially or provide food. Volunteers donate their time each week.

This past winter, center volunteers helped the Riverside Brownie Troop earn its Philanthropy Badge. Before school one Friday, the Scouts helped volunteers at Liberty Valley Intermediate School pack food bags for the weekend for students.

The Scouts also volunteered March 4. They helped hang clothes at the center’s store.

A free concert in Danville’s Memorial Park will benefit the center. Van Wagner will perform beginning at 7 p.m. June 10. Proceeds from sales of refreshments, starting at 6:30 p.m., will go to the center.

Serving on the mission center board are Cynthia Gearhart, Dale Erb, Jane Kettlewell, Jesse Reibson, Nancy Fritz, Lee Reibsome, Beverly Prall, Donna Cush, Sandy O’Rourke, Cleo Weader, Ken Ackerman, Scott Hasenbalg and Robert Davies.

Donations for the center can be sent to Good Samaritan Mission, P.O. Box 114, Danville.
